Canucks win Sundin sweepstakes

Their inability to create the necessary space to sign free agent center Mats Sundin proved to be their downfall, as the New York Rangers have lost the sweepstakes to the Vancouver Canucks.

Sundin announced today that he has signed with the Canucks.

Sources told TFP that the Rangers unofficially tendered a one-year, $6 million offer to sign the 37-year-old Swede, but the team would not have been able to make any roster adjustments until closer to the New Year.

Sundin's desire to play sooner ultimately played a role into his decision in accepting the Canucks' offer, a one-year pro-rated $10 million deal.

"We are very excited to have Mats join the Vancouver Canucks," said Canucks GM Mike Gillis. "Playing previously in two Canadian markets and consistently being among team and League leaders in scoring, Mats has proven that he can excel under pressure. He adds a wealth of experience, leadership and skill to the Canucks."

Sundin, who had approximately 10 teams seriously interested in signing him last month, narrowed his list down to five teams; the Canucks, Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks.

Like the Rangers, the Habs, Flyers and Blackhawks were not able to clear enough salary to accomodate Sundin.

"I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks," said Sundin. "Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process."

Sundin has played in 1,305 career NHL regular season games with Toronto and Quebec, and has recorded 555 goals, 766 assists, 1,321 points and 1,065 penalty minutes.

From the Editor: This came down to the wire, it appears. The Rangers told the Sundin camp that the only way they'd bring him in is if they'd give New York more time... and Sundin didn't want to wait any longer, so he went to Vancouver. The Canucks automatically get better, that much is obvious. I'll write a column tonight or tomorrow morning about the signing. The Canucks are holding a conference call at 4:45pm PT and I'll be jumping in on that. -- David Pagnotta
