The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to lock up defenseman Nikita Zaitsev to a long-term contract extension and a deal could be on the horizon.
Zaitsev, 25, is wrapping up a one-year contract and can become a restricted free agent July 1.
However, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Leafs and Zaitsev could be finalizing a deal as long as seven years.
One source close to the situation has told TFP the deal could be worth in between $4 million and $5 million per year.
In 75 games with the Maple Leafs, to date, Zaitsev has registered four goals and 29 assists for 33 points, and 34 penalty minutes.
