Leafs close to acquiring Gorges

The Maple Leafs and Canadiens have a deal in place that will see Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges head to Toronto, if he waives his no-trade clause.

Gorges has a limited no-trade clause and has listed Toronto among the teams he will not accept a deal to.

If he changes his mind and waives his no-trade clause for the Maple Leafs, the deal could be finalized as early as today.

Gorges, 29, registered one goal and 13 assists for 14 points, as well as 12 penalty minutes and a plus-six rating, in 66 games with the Habs this past season.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Canadiens will receive a roster player from the Leafs, if Gorges accepts the deal.

In 560 career NHL regular-season games with the San Jose Sharks and Habs, Gorges has accumulated 14 goals and 84 assists for 98 points, along with 249 penalty minutes.

The Canadiens acquired Gorges, along with a first-round pick, on Feb. 25, 2007, in exchange for Craig Rivet and a fifth-round draft pick.
