Kessel contract talks haven't started

With training camps now open across the NHL, plenty of focus will be placed on certain players entering the final year of their contracts.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs having locked up center Nazem Kadri to a two-year deal yesterday, and restricted free agent defenseman Cody Franson still looking for a deal, star winger Phil Kessel will get a lot of attention.

Contract negotiations between the Maple Leafs and Kessel haven't started yet, the 25-year-old confirmed.

Speaking to Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston earlier today, Kessel said he wants a long-term contract extension.

"I want to be somewhere for a long period of time," he told Johnston, who Tweeted the quote.

In 48 games with the Leafs last season, Kessel registered 20 goals and 32 assists for 52 points.

The native of Madison, Wisconsin, is in the final year of a five-year, $27 million contract. Talks between the two sides are expected to start later this month.

Meanwhile, the Leafs continue talks with Franson, who is seeking a multi-year contract worth around $4 million per season.

Leafs GM Dave Nonis confirmed to reporters this morning that the team has pitched another offer to Franson.

"We've made him an offer that we want him to take," he said.
