Leafs sign Gunnarsson to 3-year contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Carl Gunnarsson to a three-year, $9.45 million contract, avoiding salary arbitration.

Gunnarsson, 26, will earn $2.85 million next season, $3.15 million in 2014-15, and $3.45 million in the final year of his new deal.

In 37 games with the Leafs this past season, Gunnarsson registered one goal and 14 assists for 15 points.

The native of Orebro, Sweden, has played in 224 career NHL regular-season games, all with the Leafs, and has accumulated 12 goals and 57 assists for 69 points, along with 58 penalty minutes.

Gunnarsson was originally drafted by Toronto in the seventh-round (194th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
