Leafs reportedly worth $1 billion

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the first NHL franchise worth $1 billion, according to a report done by Forbes magazine.

The Leafs are worth $250 million more than the second most valuable franchise, the New York Rangers. The Montreal Canadiens sit in third place and are reportedly worth $575 million. The three clubs account for 83 percent of the NHL's income.

The Leafs have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967.

The reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Los Angeles Kings sit in 10th place overall and are worth $276 million, while the St. Louis Blues sit in last place at $130 million, behind the Phoenix Coyotes at $134 million.

Forbes reports that the NHL's total revenues were $3.4 billion for the 2011-12 season. The average team is now worth $282 million, 18 percent more than a year ago.
