Burke skeptical of Kaberle trade

Having received several offers for veteran Tomas Kaberle, Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke isn't certain he will be trading away his star defenseman.

Kaberle, 32, has one-year remaining on his contract that will see him make $4.25 million next season.

The Leafs have a window in his contract, from the day of the NHL Entry Draft through Aug. 15, to trade Kaberle without his consent. If he's not dealt today, his no-trade clause kicks back him.

Burke has admitted to receiving many offers for Kaberle, but told TSN this morning that nothing is imminent.

"If these offers are all we get...he's staying put," he said.

The Leafs have indicated that if they do not trade Kaberle by Aug. 15, they will explore signing him to a contract extension. Kaberle's agent, Rick Curran, has said that he and his client are open to exploring a new contract.

The Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres have all been linked to having an interest in Kaberle.

In 82 games with the Leafs last season, Kaberle recorded seven goals and 42 assists for 49 points.

The four-time All-Star has played in 820 career regular-season games, all with the Leafs, and has accumulated 80 goals and 402 assists for 482 points.

Kaberle was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the eighth round (204th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
