Kaberle to remain a Maple Leaf?

Despite all the reports suggesting otherwise, there remains a good chance defenseman Tomas Kaberle isn't traded this summer, the Toronto Sun reports.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke hinted to a local radio station that he "expected" Kaberle to be back with the team next season.

Kaberle, who has one-year left on his contract beyond this season, has a window in his contract, from the day of the NHL Entry Draft to Aug. 15, that allows the Leafs to trade him without his prior consent. After that timeframe, dealt or not, Kaberle's no-trade clause kicks back in.

Leafs head coach Ron Wilson also expects his star defenseman to return.

"Hopefully, he will be back," Wilson told the Sun. "He has a role carrying the puck and on the power lay. We have (other guys) who concentrate on the defensive aspect of the game on our blue line."

During last year's draft, the Leafs almost traded Kaberle to be Boston Bruins. At this year's trade deadline, Kaberle was willing to waive his no-trade for three teams, but the Leafs didn't find the right deal.

If the right deal comes along, don't think for a second Brian Burke won't pull the trigger. Lhe Leafs will use that window in Kaberle's contract to maximize his value and if something significant presents itself, a deal will be made. The Leafs will spend the summer revamping their forward units, and Kaberle's a very good asset to have to lure a scoring forward to Toronto. -- David Pagnotta
