Leafs won't trade Kaberle

Yesterday's addition of Dion Phaneuf does not mean the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to trade veteran blueliner Tomas Kaberle.

Kaberle, who has a no-trade clause, has been the subject of numerous trade rumors over the last two seasons.

Kaberle has told TFP several times that he is not interested in moving, and the Leafs continue to indicate they will not trade him.

"Nothing's going to change, there," Burke told reporters yesterday.

"I'm not going to ask Tomas Kaberle to waive his no-trade," Burke added. "I want people clear on that.

"In my mind, an organization has to have some morals and has to have some principles, and has to honor the men that went before them. (Former GM) John Ferguson gave that no-trade in good faith. You have to be an elite player to get one. I think it would be unfair to Fergie and to the player for me to say, 'Well, yeah, you have a no-trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I didn't give it to you, so we're not going to honor it.' I don't get that."

Kaberle's no-trade clause has a window that allows the Leafs to trade him without his permission during the off-season if the team misses the playoffs.

Burke suggested if a trade involving Kaberle ever takes place, the summer might be the only time in which one will be completed.

"There is an opportunity there, if that's something we want to talk about," Burke said.

Meanwhile, Burke acknowledged that he wasn't done making moves and expects to be very busy between now and the Mar. 3 trade deadline.

"We are at a buying and selling mode," Burke admitted. "We're open for business."
