Leafs to pursue Huselius, court Marleau?

TheFourthPeriod.com

As the Maple Leafs play the waiting game with captain Mats Sundin, GM Cliff Fletcher is busy preparing for a hectic free agent season.

It has become public knowledge that the Leafs have given the Montreal Canadiens exclusive negotiating rights with Sundin, and sources tell TFP Habs GM Bob Gainey has spoken to the star center "at least twice since Friday."

If Sundin doesn't ink a deal with the Habs by July 1, or doesn't re-sign with the Leafs, a number of teams will be hot on his trail, including the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks.

With a week to go before the flood gates open, Fletcher is sketching his next move.

The Leafs are trying to trade Darcy Tucker, Pavel Kubina, Andrew Raycroft and Kyle Wellwood, among others. If a deal can't be worked out by June 30, the Leafs are expected to buy out the contracts of Tucker and Raycroft.

Fletcher has until Aug. 15 to trade Kubina, and he's prepared to do so if the right offer comes around.

With a number of changes expected to take place this summer, Toronto will be active in the free agent market.

Providing Sundin doesn't return, the team will have an extra $7 million to play with -- they've offered him a one-year, $7M deal. Depending on buyouts and trades, the Leafs will have plenty of room to add free agents.

However, instead of going after the likes of Marian Hossa and Brian Campbell, the Maple Leafs are expected to pursue such players as Calgary Flames winger Kristian Huselius, Pittsburgh Penguins sniper Ryan Malone, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ron Hainsey and Phoenix Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata.

While there aren't many top-line centermen available on the market, a trade could bring one in. It has been widely reported that the Leafs have been discussing a move with San Jose involving Sharks captain Patrick Marleau, with Kubina and Wellwood rumored to be heading the other way.

The Sharks worked out a deal for Kubina at the trade deadline, but the veteran defenseman refused to waive his no-trade clause.

Huselius, meanwhile, made $1.4 million with the Flames last season and could command between $3.5 million and $4 million per season on a long-term deal.

It's starting to look more and more likely the Leafs are preparing for life without Sundin. Tucker and Raycroft are likely gone, as well. The Leafs are expected to have a much younger squad next season, and that's something Fletcher is looking forward to. Players like Huselius, Vrbata and Malone hit the age group Toronto is going for. Huselius' offensive abilities would be welcomed in Leaf-land. Regarding the Marleau speculation, don't believe the stories suggesting the Sharks NEED to trade Marleau in order to free up cap space to sign Brian Campbell. They have enough cap space, and dealing him for Kubina and Wellwood frees up about $400,000. The Leafs will be busy this summer, that's for sure. Whether they can get the guys they want is another story.
