Why would Burke choose Toronto?

TheFourthPeriod.com

There's no hiding the fact the Maple Leafs are extremely interested in having Brian Burke as their next GM, but the National Post wonders why he'd accept the position.

The Leafs are the league's top revenue generator, and Burke could generate a salary of upwards of $5 million per year, but he'd be leaving a club with a plethora of stars locked up to long-term contracts.

The Post, however, suggests that Burke could play Toronto's interest into a contract extension with the Ducks, where he has one year remaining on his current deal.

Burke has indicated that he's interested in discussing an extension with Anaheim and with their season now over, those talks are expected to commence in the coming weeks.

The Post notes the Ducks are a better team, Burke's salary would be around the same price, and the media is far less in Southern California.

Burke might be interested in the challenge of taking over the Leafs and building them into a Stanley Cup contender. The team needs to make plenty of changes and is expected to move a number of its players over the summer.

The Leafs will be intensifying their search for a new GM, and have yet to ask the Ducks for permission to speak with Burke.

However, the Toronto Sun reports the Leafs might be willing to offer a five-year, $23 million contract for Burke's services.

The Sun notes that it's too early for Burke to make any decision, and that the Leafs have not officially interviewed anyone for the GM job.
