Filppula signs with Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning has signed unrestricted free agent center Valtteri Filppula to a five-year contract worth $25 million.

Filppula, 29, was being courted by several teams, but ultimately chose the Lightning.

In 41 games with the Detroit Red Wings this past season, Filppula registered nine goals and eight assists for 17 points.

Filppula has played in seven full seasons with the Red Wings, spanning 483 regular-season games, and has accumulated 100 goals and 151 assists for 251 points.

He was originally drafted by Detroit in the third-round (95th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
