St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong admitted that re-signing pending restricted free agent Jaden Schwartz is the team's top priority this off-season.
The Blues do not have a lot of salary cap space to work with, and with the cap slightly increasing for next season, they won't be able to re-sign all of their players.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Schwartz's next contract will dictate how much flexibility the team has to work with this summer.
"I have to make the math equation work," Armstrong told the paper. "But if there was one player that I'm focusing in on talking to, it would be Schwartz, and if that doesn't work out on a long-term deal, it probably adds a little more money to next year’s team."
Backes and the Blues are discussing an extension, as well, though term appears to be a stumbling block.
It's believed Backes is looking for a deal in the five-year range, while the Blues may be standing firm on four-years.
