Blues want Pietrangelo locked up

The Blues are willing to wait as long as it takes to get star defenseman Alex Pietrangelo signed to a reasonable contract, but that doesn't mean they don't see a sense of urgency in the matter.

Pietrangelo, one of the game's top young blueliners, remains a restricted free agent and won't be traveling to St. Louis until the two sides come to terms on a new contract.

Blues GM Doug Armstrong emphasized Thursday to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he wants "to get this done as quickly as possible," but understands the numerous factors involved.

Both parties have until Dec. 1 to get a deal done, or Pietrangelo risks missing the entire season.

"We want our fans to know we're working hard to come to resolution with a player we trust and respect and who wants to be in St. Louis," Armstrong said. "We don't take it personally. We think Alex understands it's a business."

Pietrangelo is believed to be looking for a deal similar to the eight-year, $56 million contract Drew Doughty received with the Los Angeles Kings. Pietrangelo and Doughty share the same agents.

"We're going to sign him when we're comfortable and he's comfortable -- and not before that," Armstrong said. "It's not going to be influenced by win-loss record."
