Blues sign Bouwmeester to 5-year extension

The St. Louis Blues have signed veteran defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a five-year contract extension worth $27 million.

Bouwmeester, 29, has one-year left on his current deal, which pays him $6.6 million next season, though his salary cap hit is $6.68 million.

The Edmonton, Alberta native was acquired by the Blues in a trade with the Calgary Flames on April 1, 2013.

Bouwmeester registered seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 47 games with the Flames and Blues this past season.

In 764 career NHL regular-season games with the Florida Panthers, Flames and Blues, Bouwmeester has accumulated 72 goals and 235 assists for 307 points, along with 469 penalty minutes.

He was originally drafted third-overall by the Panthers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
