Blues give Sydor a chance

Fifteen-year NHL veteran Darryl Sydor is hoping he still has what it takes to crack an NHL lineup and wants to do so with the Blues, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Sydor, 37, has come to the Blues on a tryout contract.

"I think I can still move the puck and I can still skate," Sydor told the paper. "I think those are aspects of the game that are really used now. This game is fast and I feel I can still contribute. That's why I'm here trying out."

Sydor likes what he sees in the Blues' roster and believes he can play a vital role in the team's success this season as they battle for a playoff spot.

"There are a lot of young kids here that are very dedicated," he said. "They're not taking their jobs for granted and they're working hard. That's the right thing to have. The young guys are pushing each other to be better every day."

The Blues won't sign Sydor if they only think he'll be a mentor to some of the club's younger players, like Erik Johnson and Alex Pietrangelo (if he cracks the lineup, too). Blues coach Andy Murray wants Sydor to be able to support his club and perform well. So far, Sydor seems to have played well and if he keeps it up, he'll earn his spot. -- David Pagnotta
