While Wilson has been focusing on improving his roster since his team's early exit in this year's playoffs, he is not expected to pry Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, captain Ryan Callahan or defenseman Marc Staal out of New York in return for Thornton.
Though it has not been said who Wilson would want in return, it would likely be a hefty package that the Rangers would choose to pass up.
Thornton also has a no-trade clause in his contract and the idea of playing at the Madison Square Garden might not appeal to him after he got in trouble for calling the Blueshirts a soft team.
While Dupont can say that such a scenario could take place, the Sharks are not expected to part with Thornton, who collected 18 goals and 59 assists for 77 points in 82 games last season.
