Sharks to sign Mayers

The San Jose Sharks are on the verge of signing unrestricted free agent forward Jamal Mayers, the team announced on its website.

Mayers split last season between Calgary and Toronto, registering three goals, 11 assists and 131 penalty minutes in 71 games.

"Jamal is a fast, physical, team-first player who brings the ingredients we were looking for to this role," Sharks GM Doug Wilson told sanjosesharks.com. "He is an extremely fit athlete who can kill penalties and we think he will mesh well with our group of forwards."

In 737 NHL games with St, Louis, Toronto and Calgary, Mayers has accumulated 81 games and 107 assists for 188 points, with 969 penalty minutes.

The Toronto native was originally drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round (89th overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
