Spaling inks two-year contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have avoided arbitration with restricted free agent forward Nick Spaling, signing him to a two-year, $4.4 million contract.

Spaling, 25, was acquired by the Penguins from the Nashville Predators along with Patric Hornqvist on June 28.

He is coming off a career year this past season, where he recorded 13 goals for 19 assists for 32 points in 71 games with the Predators.

The native of Palmerston, Ontario, has played four-plus seasons with Nashville, registering 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 points in 297 career regular-season games.

He was originally drafted by the Predators in the second round (58th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
