Letang agrees to 8-year contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with star defenseman Kris Letang on an eight-year, $58 million contract.

Letang, 26, has one-year left on his current contract and was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013-14 season.

He originally rejected an eight-year, $56 million deal, and countered with a deal worth more than $7.5 million per year, which Pittsburgh rejected.

The two sides found a middle ground on a deal that includes a limited no-movement clause.

In 35 games with the Penguins this past season, the Montreal native registered five goals and 33 assists for 38 points, including a plus-16 rating.
