TheFourthPeriod.com

The Penguins want Sergei Gonchar locked up to a new deal and contract talks are expected to pick up next week, reports the Ottawa Sun.

Gonchar is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

According to the Sun, Penguins GM Ray Shero will discuss a contract extension with Gonchar's agent, J.P. Barry, next week in Vancouver.

In 42 games this season, Gonchar has registered eight goals and 26 assists for 34 points.

Meanwhile, the Sun also reports the Penguins are trying to acquire left wing Ray Whitney from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Whitney, who is in the final year of his contract, has a no-trade clause and would have to approve any deal the Hurricanes try to complete.
