Penguins trying to re-sign Sykora

TheFourthPeriod.com

As Penguins GM Ray Shero sets his sights on the upcoming trade deadline, his team is also trying to re-sign right wing Petr Sykora to a new contract.

According to the Ottawa Sun, the Penguins want to keep Sykora because of the chemistry he's developed with center Evgeni Malkin.

Sykora, 32, is in the final year of his current deal and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Negotiations are believed to have started. Sykora is making $2.5 million this season.

From the Editor: Greetings from Detroit, where the Red Wings take on the Colorado Avalanche tonight. I don't see why the Penguins are putting their time and effort into re-signing Sykora, simply for the reason that all their attention should be on improving the team's chances of making the playoffs. After a brutal loss last night to Toronto, it's obvious Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero needs to get a front-line winger. Tell Sykora you want him and negotiate after the trade deadline so you can shift your focus elsewhere.
