Pens still want Hossa; Malkin deal coming

TheFourthPeriod.com

Even though Marian Hossa informed the Penguins that he'll test the market today doesn't mean the team won't try to sign him, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

According to the paper, the Penguins to have a five-year, $35 million offer on the table for Hossa.

The Penguins will have plenty of competition, however, as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review claims the Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens are willing to spend $8 million per season to sign Hossa.

The Edmonton Journal reports the Oilers may be willing to give as much as $9 million per year on a long-term deal.

One player the Penguins are likely to lock up is Evgeni Malkin, who has one-year remaining on his current contract.

Malkin is expected to sign an extension this week and reports out of Pittsburgh suggest is could be a five-year deal worth $8.5 million per season.

Meanwhile, defenseman Brooks Orpik could receive offers worth up to $4 million per year, which the Post-Gazette suggests is out of the Penguins' price range.

Penguins GM Ray Shero is trying to re-sign free agents Jarkko Ruutu, Pascal Dupuis and Adam Hall.

The Post-Gazette also reports the Penguins are expected to work out a new contract for center Jordan Staal this summer.
