Smith agrees to 6-year deal

The Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to terms with veteran goaltender Mike Smith on a six-year contract extension.

Smith, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 5, will earn roughly $5.7 million per year on his new deal.

Smith, 31 posted a 15-12-5 record with the Coyotes this past season, along with a 2.58 goals-against-average and a .910 save percentage.

The native of Kingston, Ontario, has played in 263 career NHL games with the Dalals Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning and Coyotes, and has accumulated a 120-96-34 record with a 2.57 goals-against-average and a .913 save percentage.

He was originally drafted by the Stars in the fifth-round (161st overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
