Coyotes hoping coach Tippett stays

With GM Don Maloney locked up to a new deal, the Coyotes are hoping head coach Dave Tippett follows suit and inks a new contract with the organization.

The NHL, who currently owns the Coyotes, has an agreement in place with Renaissance Sports & Entertainment to buy the club, but they need a new lease agreement with the City of Glendale.

Until a new lease deal is ironed out, the Coyotes' future in Arizona remains in limbo, and as such, Tippett's hesitant to re-sign with the club.

"To me it's a challenge," Maloney told the Arizona Republic. "I think it's been shown with great coaching, with Dave Tippett, with great chemistry and great goaltending, you can win here."

The Coyotes are also hoping to re-sign goalie Mike Smith and center Boyd Gordon, but they too are waiting to see how the ownership situation pans out before committing to the team.

Maloney told the Republic he briefly spoke with Smith's agent last week.

"We have a lot of work to do," he said.
