Former Coyotes forward Peter Mueller was so unhappy in Phoenix that he had asked to be traded several months ago, the Arizona Republic reports.

Mueller, who was dealt along with defenseman Kevin Porter to the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday for forward Wojtek Wolski, struggled with his game in Phoenix all season and wanted out.

Coyotes GM Don Maloney said Mueller was "very, very unhappy."

"He asked for a trade months and months ago; he wanted a new lease on life," Maloney told the Republic. "We tried to make it work. I really was trying to do everything in my power to see if we could make it work, because he has tremendous talent.

"I think he's going to be a tremendous player if it all comes together for him. . . . I think when Peter does evolve, you hope that he can be a 50-, 60-point player."

In 54 games with the Coyotes this season, Mueller recorded four goals and 13 assists. He has picked up a goal and an assist in two games with the Avalanche so far.
