Flyers must decide what to do about defense
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Flyers are likely to be buyers at the trade deadline due to the number of injuries piling up and their lack of depth on defense, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Although Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has four talented defensemen in Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle and Andrej Meszaros, and two promising rookies in Marc-Andre Bourdon and Erik Gustafsson, he may decide to acquire more help on the back end.

There have been speculations that the Nashville Predators could make All Star blueliners Shea Weber and Ryan Suter available prior to the deadline, though the Flyers would want assurances that they can sign one of them to a long-term deal.

Meanwhile, Holmgren could look to Carolina where two defensemen with the potential to become unrestricted free agents, Tim Gleason and Bryan Allen, are on their list.

Other available blueliners include Toronto Maple Leafs' Luke Schenn, whose brother Brayden is already in Philly, former Flyer Mark Eaton of the New York Islanders, and Montreal Canadiens' Hal Gill.

The 36-year-old Gill, at 6-foot-7, 241 pounds, could replace the size the Flyers are missing with Pronger sidelined.

The Flyers currently sit in fourth place of the Eastern Conference with a 29-14-5 record.
