Flyers looking to make moves
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Flyers are among the teams actively trying to pull the trigger on a trade in the coming weeks, reports the Philadelphia Daily News.

According to the paper, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has contacted Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell about superstar forward Ilya Kovalchuk, who was told he'll be traded in the coming days.

Kovalchuk, 26, is in the final year of his contract and is also being coveted by the likes of the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.

The Daily News indicates the Flyers would need to clear a significant amount of cap space to accommodate Kovalchuk's salary. The paper also notes the players linked to trade speculation - Simon Gagne, Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere - all have no-trade clauses.

I can't see the Flyers making a move for Kovalchuk. There are too many factors involved that don't add up. And, if the Flyers make a move, it'll only be as a rental player, as they wouldn't be able to afford him long-term. -- David Pagnotta
