Spezza rejects trade to Nashville

The Ottawa Senators had a deal in place with the Predators that would have sent center Jason Spezza to Nashville, but the veteran center rejected the deal.

Soon after, the Predators traded forwards Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for left wing James Neal.

Talks between the Senators and Predators are believed to be ongoing, since Nashville's acquisition of Neal, though it's unclear if Spezza will change his mind.

"(Preds GM) David (Poile) talked to me and we couldn't go there," Senators GM Bryan Murray told the media, as quoted by The Canadian Press. "I told (Spezza's agent) Rick Curran that today, I had a deal sitting there if I wanted to do it, but he was on the list of no-go's."

Murray spoke to five teams about Spezza, but was unable to come to terms on a trade during the NHL Draft.

Trade talks are expected to resume after the Draft and into July.

"I'm sure it's disappointing for him, it's disappointing for me because I'd like to accommodate him if I could, but he does have a year left on his contract," Murray said. "If that's the case we'll have a pretty good player for next year."
