Phillips inks two-year extension

The Ottawa Senators have signed a two-year, $5 million contract extension with veteran defenseman Chris Phillips.

If the two sides weren't able to agree to terms to a new deal, the Senators were expected to trade Phillips.

In 52 games with the Senators so far this season, Phillips has registered one goal and 12 assists for 13 points.

The Calgary native has played in 1,125 career NHL regular-season games, so far, all with the Senators, and has accumulated 71 goals and 212 assists for 283 points.

He was originally drafted first-overall by the Senators in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
