Senators, Volchenkov negotiating deal

The Ottawa Senators are interested in signing defenseman Anton Volchenkov to a contract extension, and the feeling appears to be mutual.

Volchenkov, who turned 28 on Feb. 25, is in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Drafted 21st overall by the Senators in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Volchenkov has spent his entire NHL career with Ottawa.

Prior to this week's trade deadline, Senators GM Bryan Murray suggested the team might look to move Volchenkov if the two sides had not agreed on a new contract by Wednesday's deadline.

As no trade took place, the Senators and Volchenkov have taken the right steps in their negotiations towards a new deal.

While it's uncertain if a contract is imminent, it appears the lines of communication are wide open and the objective is to get a deal done.

Volchenkov has a cap hit of $2.5 million and could see that figure climb over the $4.25 million range.
