Senators sign Carkner to new deal

The Ottawa Senators have signed defenseman Matt Carkner to a two-year contract extension worth $1.4 million.

Carkner, 28, has appeared in each of the team's seven regular-season games to date, averaging 18:03 time-on-ice and currently ranking eighth (tied) in the NHL in blocked shots (19).

A second-round draft choice (58th overall) of the Montreal Canadiens in 1999, Carkner has played in nine career NHL games, tallying three points (one goal and two assists), and 21 penalty minutes.
