Senators, Islander complete trade

TheFourthPeriod.com

The Ottawa Senators have traded center Dean McAmmond and a 2009 first-round pick to the New York Islanders for center Mike Comrie and defenseman Chris Campoli.

The first-round draft choice originally belongs to the San Jose Sharks, and came from the Tampa Bay Lightning when they acquired Andrej Meszaros on Aug. 29, 2008, from the Senators for Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard.

McAmmond, 35, has registered three goals and four assists for seven points in 44 games with the Senators this season.

In 916 regular-season games, the Grand Cache, Alta., native has 176 goals, 246 assists and 442 penalty minutes.

Comrie, 28, returns to the Senators, having played 61 games for them during the 2006-07 season.

In 41 games this season with the Islanders, Comrie has seven goals, 13 assists and 26 penalty minutes.

The Edmonton native has played in 503 career NHL games, registering 151 goals, 180 assists and 389 penalty minutes with the Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Senators and Islanders. He was originally drafted by the Oilers in the third-round, 91st overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Campoli, 24, is in his fourth season in the NHL and with the Islanders. In 51 games this season, he has collected six goals, 17 assists and 43 penalty minutes.

He was originally selected in the seventh round, 227th overall, of the 2004 entry draft, by the Islanders.

Comrie and McAmmond are in the final year of their respective contracts and can become unrestricted free agents July 1.

From the Editor: Not sure I understand this move from Ottawa's perspective. The Islanders had been looking to move Comrie and his salary, and were shopping Campoli for some time. They got a 1st round pick out of it, which is big for this team. For the Senators, though, I just don't get it. Campoli is solid on the backend, and maybe he comes in to replace Filip Kuba, who the Sens might trade away. But to add Comrie? Unless they feel they can win at least 18 of their next 25 games, the Senators aren't making the playoffs. Mind you, everything about Ottawa this season doesn't make much sense, so who knows... -- David Pagnotta.
