The Ottawa Senators are serious about getting captain Daniel Alfredsson locked up to a new long-term contract.

According to TSN, team owner Eugene Melnyk and GM Bryan Murray will meet with Alfredsson's agent JP Barry in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday to discuss an extension.

Alfredsson, who has a cap hit of just over $4.33 million this season, has three option years remaining on his current contract. TSN reports if he reaches 70 points in 70 games next season, he can opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.

While negotiations could lead into the season, Murray doesn't believe their discussions will become a distraction for Alfredsson.

"Alfie's not the kind of person that will let it bother him," Murray told TSN. "The media will definitely ask the question on a consistent basis. I don't think he will let it sway the way he plays and I'd like to think the players on board know we have great respect for him."
