Alfredsson, Sens talk extension

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and agent J.P. Barry are expected to meet with GM Bryan Murray and discuss a contract extension, reports the Ottawa Sun.

The Ottawa Citizen reported over the weekend that Barry has already presented the Senators with an outline on an extension in the four- to five- year range.

After this season, Alfredsson has three option years, one-year each, attached to his current contract that was signed prior to the NHL lockout.

"We'll see," Alfredsson told the Citizen. "If it happens, it happens. I don't think I'll be talking about negotiations as they go along, and whether we're close or not.

"My focus is on trying to get the season off to a good start."

According to the Sun, Alfredsson could command a deal worth more than $6.5 million per season, and the paper suggests a deal will get done sooner rather than later. The value of each of his option years is $3.8 million, plus bonuses. He will make $5.465 million this season.

The Citizen claims Senators owner Eugene Melnyk will be involved in negotiations.
