Senators contact Sundin's agent

According to the Ottawa Sun, Senators GM Bryan Murray has made at least three calls expressing his club's interest in free agent superstar Mats Sundin.

While the paper notes Sundin may not choose to sign with the Senators, the team did try to acquire him at the trade deadline last February. Sundin refused to waive his no-trade clause.

Sundin met with the Toronto Maple Leafs last Friday and the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

The New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders have also expressed an interest in Sundin, with the Canucks haven't yet to pull their two-year, $20 million offer off the table.

J.P. Barry, Sundin's agent, refused to speculate on teams who have shown interest in his client.

"I'm not going to confirm or deny that (the Senators) are among the teams interested," he told the Sun. "I'm not going to get into the teams that are interested because right now it doesn't make any difference until Mats makes a decision on whether he's going to play or not. If Mats decides that he's going to play, then we'll follow up with the teams that have shown an interest."

With almost $52 million already committed to this season's payroll, the Sun suggests the Senators would have to make a move in order to free up cap space to sign Sundin, if he opts to join their team.
