Senators, Phillips start discussions TheFourthPeriod.com
Senators GM John Muckler and Chris Phillips' agent have started contract negotiations, but haven't talked specifics yet, reports the Ottawa Citizen.
Phillips, 28, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
"We've had some preliminary talks," Phillips' agent, Stacey McAlpine, told the Citizen. "What we've established is that there's a sincere willingness on both sides to get something done, but we have no timelines."
Phillips isn't overly concerned with his contract, as his man focus is getting the Senators into the playoffs.
According to the paper, Phillips, who makes $2.2 million this season, could be worth as much as $3.5 million to $4 million a year on the open market.
Phillips has indicated he wants to stay in Ottawa, but if the Senators aren't willing to pay the price he may end up packing his bags. If he hits the open market, there will be plenty of teams knocking on his door.
