The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Brendan Smith from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2017 third-round draft pick and a 2018 second-round draft pick.
The Wings and Smith had discussed a contract extension, but could not agree to terms, leading to the trade.
Smith, 28, registered two goals, three assists and 34 penalty minutes in 33 games with the Wings this season.
In 291 career NHL regular-season games, Smith accumulated 15 goals and 52 assists for 67 points and 281 penalty minutes.
Smith was originally drafted 27th overall by the Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
