"There is still some negotiating to do," Don Meehan, who represents Girardi, along with Pat Morris, told the New York Post via email Thursday afternoon.
Girardi is believed to be looking for a six-year contract worth $5.5 million, per season. The Rangers have reportedly been stuck on wanting a five-year deal.
Several teams have expressed an interest in Girardi, including the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.
Meanwhile, the Rangers continue to chat with other teams have trading captain Ryan Callahan.
Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett, remains in contact with Rangers GM Glen Sather, but the two sides are still far from an agreement.
Callahan is expected to be traded by the March 5 trade deadline.
