Rangers keeping wires hot
TheFourthPeriod.com

New York Rangers GM Glen Sather probably won't want to review his upcoming phone bill, as he's been working the lines pretty hard these last few weeks.

While his team has started to get hot, climbing to third in the Metropolitan Division, Sather would still like to add to his roster before the March 5 trade deadline.

Sather has been fielding calls, and making their own, about a number of his players, most notably defensemen Dan Girardi and Michael Del Zotto.

The Rangers and Anaheim Ducks have chatted about a deal involving Girardi, but it remains to be seen if the Blueshirts are set on moving him.

Girardi, 29, is in the final year of his current contract and can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Rangers would like to sign Girardi to a contract extension, but it's unclear if talks between the two sides have made any traction. If Sather feels he cannot sign Girardi long-term, he will get serious about trading him.

Del Zotto, 23, has played better recently for the Rangers, but remains on the block.

The Rangers want to upgrade both ends of the rink, and moving Girardi means they're going to want to obtain a defenseman either in return or as part of a separate trade.

Sather also wants to obtain a top-six forward with an eye for the net and could be targeting the likes of Calgary Flames forward Michael Cammalleri, recently diagnosed with a concussion, Edmonton Oilers right wing Ales Hemsky, and Buffalo Sabres sniper Matt Moulson.
