Messier wants to coach the Rangers

Former Rangers captain Mark Messier has tossed his hat in the ring and wants to become the next head coach of the franchise, reports the New York Daily News.

Citing multiple sources, the Daily News claims Messier wants to be behind the bench of the Rangers and replace John Tortorella, who was recently dismissed.

Meanwhile, Sportsnet has reported that Wayne Gretzky is also interested in the position.

The Rangers have already started searching for a new coach, and have received permission to interview former Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault and Toronto Marlies (AHL) coach Dallas Eakins.

It's believed former Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff will also be in touch with the Rangers about their vacancy.

Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett could also become available later this month, as his contract with the Coyotes is set to expire on June 30. The Coyotes are trying to re-sign him, but he wants to know what the future of the franchise is before committing.

If Tippett becomes available, the Rangers are expected to pursue him.
