Will the Rangers deal for Smyth?
TheFourthPeriod.com

Rangers GM Glen Sather is expected to use the upcoming trade deadline to add both scoring punch and a defenseman to his lineup, but could be interest in reuniting with Edmonton Oilers winger Ryan Smyth.

According to a well-placed source of the New York Post, Smyth, who was originally selected sixth overall by Sather and the Oilers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, could consider waiving his no-movement clause in order to pursue a Stanley Cup in New York City.

Smyth, who will turn 36 on Feb. 21, is currently in the final year of his contract and earns a $6.25 million cap hit.

The Blueshirts would have to clear space in order to acquire the veteran forward and potentially get a defenseman at the deadline.

It remains to be seen if the longstanding relationship with Sather will be enough for Smyth to leave Edmonton. The Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are also rumored to be interested in the Oilers’ winger.

In 52 games with the Oilers this season, Smyth has collected 16 goals and 20 assists for 36 points.
