Rangers dropping out of Kovalchuk race?
TheFourthPeriod.com

As much as the Rangers would love to get their hands on Atlanta Thrashers captain Ilya Kovalchuk, the asking price appears to be out of their range.

Atlanta GM Don Waddell expects to trade Kovalchuk in the coming days, but he's believed to be asking for much more than the Rangers are willing to pay.

According to NY Post reporter Larry Brooks, posting via his Twitter account, the Thrashers are looking for a combination of packages that include: defenseman Marc Staal; defenseman Michael Del Zotto and forward Ryan Callahan; or Brandon Dubinsky and a first-round pick.

The Rangers are not believed to be interested in paying such a price, thus putting them out of the running.

The Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames have also reportedly balked at the asking price.

I'm sure teams know it's going to cost an arm and a leg for Kovalchuk, but the Thrashers also know they aren't going to get the world in return for a rental player, regardless of how good he is. Now, if they allowed other teams to negotiate an extension, then that's a different story. But since that isn't the case, expect the Rangers, Bruins and many other teams to drop out of the sweepstakes. -- David Pagnotta
