Rangers acquire Backman from Blues

  The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Christian Backman from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2008 fourth-round draft pick.

Backman, 27, has appeared in 45 games with the St. Louis Blues this season, registering one goal and nine assists for 10 points, along with 30 penalty minutes.

The 6-4, 210-pound defenseman has skated in 228 career NHL contests with the St. Louis Blues, recording 19 goals and 45 assists for 64 points, along with 130 penalty minutes.

A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Backman was originally St. Louis's first pick, 24th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
