Tavares contract status remains status quo
TheFourthPeriod.com

There haven't been any significant updates on star center John Tavares' future with the New York Islanders and that doesn't seem to be a major concern for either side, right now.

Tavares, 27, is in the final year of his contract, which comes with a $5.5 million salary cap hit, and can hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent July 1, 2018.

He is poised to almost double his salary on his next deal, as many believe his 2018-19 salary will climb over the $10 million mark.

Tavares played in his 600th career game in an Islanders uniform on Thursday, becoming just the 14th player in franchise history to do so.

The Islanders have been trying to convince Tavares to stay with the club long-term and sign an eight-year extension, as ownership is hoping its plans for a new arena will be the tipping point.

For the time being, neither side is coming across overly concerned a new deal hasn't been ironed out.

It's possible Tavares decides one day that he wants a change or scenery, upon which Isles GM Garth Snow will explore a trade, but the team's goal is to keep him and as many have reported, there hasn't been any indication from Tavares that he will not consider inking an extension.
