Vanek traded to Canadiens

The New York Islanders have traded left wing Thomas Vanek and a fifth-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for right wing Sebastien Collberg and a conditional second-round draft pick.

Vanek, 30, is in the final-year of a seven-year, $50 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Vanek, 30, has recorded 21 goals and 32 assists for 53 points in 60 games this season with the New York Islanders and Sabres.

In 645 career NHL regular-season games with the Islanders and Sabres, Vanek has accumulated 271 goals and 270 assists for 541 points.

A native of Baden, Austria, Vanek was originally drafted fifth overall by the Sabres in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Drafted in the second round, 33rd overallm by the Canadiens at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Collberg has registered nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 40 games this season with the Frolunda Indians of the Swedish Elite Hockey League.
