Islanders in a buyers market?
TheFourthPeriod.com

The New York Post reports Islanders GM Garth Snow has been given the green right from owner Charles Wang to add payroll to help the team's playoff chances.

Snow relayed the message to the Post on Friday, and it's believed the Islanders are quietly shopping for some possible additions for later in the season.

The Islanders have roughly $18 million in available cap space and have the young assets to acquire a solid first- or second-line player.

The Post suggests a playoff berth would help the Islanders in their bid for a new arena on Long Island.

This option doesn't present itself every day for the Islanders, so Garth Snow better be careful. The Islanders are 11th in the East, one point out of a playoff spot. If they remain around that mark, then I can see the Isles making a move or two. If the right option is available now, they'd bite. But just because they can, doesn't mean they will. It's still very early in the season and Montreal, Philadelphia and the Rangers are starting to climb their way up the standings. -- David Pagnotta
