Money troubles in Jersey
TheFourthPeriod.com

The NHL is discussing the possibility to advance money to the New Jersey Devils so that they can continue to operate through the season, the New York Post has reported.

Reports confirm that if the deal happens, the league would continue to let controlling owner Jeffery Vanderbeek run the club while he pursues a long-term financial solution.

"We can presume if the advance has not happened, it is going to happen soon," a source close to the team told the Post.

However, a league spokesman called the report "inaccurate," but didn't elaborate to the newspaper.

The Devils, who need to meet payroll twice a month until the end of regular season, are considering trading team captain Zach Parise for draft picks.

Parise is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the team's reported financial woes could put the Devils in a tough situation as to whether they can or are even able to re-sign him.

The 27-year-old is earning a $6 million cap hit this season and his value is only expected to go up as he has posted 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 47 games this season.

The Devils, who are reportedly on track to lose up to $20 million this season, currently sit in seventh place of the Eastern Conference with 54 points. They could cut those losses if they make the post-season, allowing them to generate revenue from additional games.

It was also reported that the Devils have not been able to repay an $80 million principal payment that was originally due Sept. 1. The lenders could place the loan in default but would not be able to place the club in bankruptcy until the end of the season.
