Devils taking their time with Parise?
TheFourthPeriod.com

The New Jersey Devils and captain Zach Parise have been able to discuss a contract extension since the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, however both parties have yet to schedule a time to chat.

According to the Bergon Record, both sides were free to negotiate informally since the team and Parise settled on a one-year, $6 million contract in July to avoid arbitration hearing, but no contract talks have been planned at this point.

"These things sometimes happen when you're not thinking about it, but we haven't talked about it," Parise told the Record. "There's nothing scheduled or anything."

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello isn't one to negotiate contracts during the season, but could make an exception in Parise, who could become one of the most sought after unrestricted free agents if unsigned by July 1.

Parise is the club's second leading-scorer with 30 points, which has certainly increase his price for the pending negotiations. His trade value has therefore taken a boost and could stir up a lot of talk for the forthcoming trade deadline.

Lamoriello has yet to comment on whether he intends to try to sign Parise to an extension.

"I'm ready for both, I guess," Parise added. "I know how it has been in the past and I understand both sides. I'm prepared for either."

In 38 games with the Devils this season, Parise has recorded 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points.
