Devils liking Kovalchuk long-term?

Star sniper Ilya Kovalchuk is starting to get more comfortable with his new team and the New Jersey Devils are starting to think long-term with their newest acquisition.

Kovalchuk, 26, was traded to the Devils last month. He is in the final year of his contract and it was initially speculated he would only be a short-term fix for New Jersey.

In eight games with the Devils, Kovalchuk has picked up three goals and five assists. While the relationship is still early, sources tell TFP the Devils are expected to pitch a long-term contract extension once the season is over.

"He's been very good; he's getting chances every game," Devils head coach Jacques Lemaire told the Edmonton Sun.

"The games when he doesn't score, it's not because he's not getting the chances. He's been playing very well. He's a player that when he gets the puck, the other team feels that someone is coming. They back up a little bit, because he's got great speed, he's strong and he's got a great shot, so they think defense."

The Thrashers dealt Kovalchuk to the Devils after they were unable to sign him to an extension.

Atlanta pitched a few offers, ranging from five- to seven-years and worth around $10 million per season, but Kovalchuk told them from the start that he was interested in a lengthier contract at a similar salary. The Thrashers then presented Kovalchuk with a 12-year, $101 million offer, which was declined.

It's uncertain when the Devils will present Kovalchuk with a formal offer, but GM Lou Lamoriello seems to have the necessary support to add a player of Kovalchuk's caliber at a price tag near the $9 million to $10 million range over an extended period of time.

"He's very positive, I like his demeanor and he wants to win," Lemaire said. "He's a good guy to have on your team."
